SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 16

Declaring the Appalachian dulcimer the official state musical
instrument of West Virginia.
Whereas, West Virginia does not have an official state
musical instrument; and
Whereas, The Appalachian dulcimer, sometimes called the lap
dulcimer, the dulcimore, the duckslammer, the devil's walking
stick, the fretted zither and the hog fiddle, is believed to have
its roots in our region; and
Whereas, The Appalachian dulcimer is played by West
Virginians of all ages and many of the melodious tunes that are
played are part of West Virginia's heritage; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:
That the Appalachian dulcimer is hereby declared the
official musical instrument of West Virginia; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the Senate is hereby
directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Governor.
